Sharon McKay
Research Nurse
Sharon was born in West Lothian and this is where she continues to live. On leaving school, Sharon went to Napier University where initially she started a Financial Services degree. She quickly found that this wasn’t for her and subsequently enrolled in an Adult Nursing course, where in 2001 where she obtained Diploma of Higher Education in Adult Nursing.
On qualifying Sharon got a D Grade Staff Nurse post in General Surgery in St John’s Hospital in Livingston. There, she cared for patients having elective surgery, major colorectal surgery and those requiring surgical assessment.
Following Organisational Change of surgical service provision in NHS Lothian, Sharon went to work in the newly formed Observation Ward. This offered a surgical triage service for West Lothian residents and later evolved to become a short stay Observation Ward for the Emergency Department. During this time Sharon went back to university, on a part-time basis, and graduated with BSc Professional Practice in Adult Nursing in 2010.
In 2022, Sharon transferred to EMA’s new sister unit, Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC).
Latterly, since 2023, she has worked in the Medical Day Unit/OPAT service in St John’s Hospital. This is the post Sharon is currently seconded from.
Outside of work Sharon enjoys spending time with friends and family, and paddleboarding when the weather allows.
