Postgraduate academic opportunities for EM trainees
EMERGE TERN Trainee Research Fellow
Every year EMERGE offers up to two EMERGE TERN fellowships approved by the South East Scotland Emergency Medicine Trainee Programme Director and local Clinical Directors. Applicants should be South East Scotland Emergency Medicine trainees who will be at ST4/5 level in the August prior to the application window which is usually around March/April. Interviews will usually be held in May. These 12 month posts allow the successful applicant(s) 4 hours dedicated research time per week. The post is initially for 6 months with an option to extend to one year.
During this time, the applicant will be expected to become the South East Scotland lead for the RCEM TERN (Trainee Emergency Research Network) and become the local PI for TERN projects. In addition there will be the opportunity to get involved with the EMERGE groups other research activity.

ACCS EM week
EMERGE offer all ACCS (EM) trainees an opportunity to spend a week with the team. During this time you will work with the research delivery team in the ED gaining experience with consent, capacity assessment and recruitment to current EMERGE research studies. You will also have the opportunities to attend GCP training, learn about TERN, attend research related meetings such as our research delivery and academic lunchtime meetings, and potentially TMG, DMC and ethics meetings and will also have the opportunity to spend time with the team developing potential research ideas and learning more about research infrastructure and careers.
SJH Researcher in residence
EMERGE also offers a SJH Researcher in residence programme approved by St Johns Hospital Emergency Medicine Clinical Director. These 6 month fellow posts allow the successful applicant(s) 8 hours dedicated research time per week along with clinical time spent at St Johns Hospital Emergency Department. During the research time, the applicant will be expected to deliver a researcher led research project. In addition there will be the opportunity to get involved with other EMERGE research activity and to attend relevant research training courses and events.

Undergraduate academic opportunities for medical students
Elective
Occasionally EMERGE do take Elective students for research electives. These attachment are limited to 4 weeks and are arranged through the University of Edinburgh medical student elective programme.
SSC5a Research programme
Some of our EMERGE team are happy to act as SSC5a supervisors supporting the SSC5a Research programme. Students have around 6 weeks dedicated to SSC5a research, usually 3 blocks of 2 weeks that fit in between other teaching. Places in EMERGE are very limited and demand is high. Any available project titles and supervisor details are submitted to the University in February with meetings between potential students and supervisors taking place March and April. Alternatively if you have a specific project idea you can contact the EMERGE team (Emerge@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk) along with a copy of your CV. B Med Sci placements

Overseas Research fellowships
EMERGE offers Overseas Research fellowships for 6 or 12 months incorporating clinical and research programme activity. Applicant’s home institution must be able to fund and support the applicant for the duration of the fellowship. Academic FY2
EMERGE supports the academic FY2 programme which allows applicants either weekly dedicated research time or a 4 month research block at FY2 level. If you are interested and have a specific project idea or area of interest you can contact the EMERGE team at Emerge@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk along with a copy of your CV.
