Postgraduate academic opportunities for EM trainees
EMERGE TERN Trainee Research Fellow
Every year EMERGE offers up to two EMERGE TERN fellowships approved by the South East Scotland Emergency Medicine Trainee Programme Director and local Clinical Directors. Applicants should be South East Scotland Emergency Medicine trainees who will be at ST4/5 level in the August prior to the application window which is usually around March/April. Interviews will usually be held in May. These 12 month posts allow the successful applicant(s) 4 hours dedicated research time per week. The post is initially for 6 months with an option to extend to one year.
During this time, the applicant will be expected to become the South East Scotland lead for the RCEM TERN (Trainee Emergency Research Network) and become the local PI for TERN projects. In addition there will be the opportunity to get involved with the EMERGE groups other research activity.

ACCS EM attachment
EMERGE offer all ACCS (EM) trainees an opportunity to spend two full days with the team. During this time you will work with the research delivery team in the ED gaining experience with consent, capacity assessment and recruitment to current EMERGE research studies. You will also have the opportunities to attend GCP training, learn about TERN, attend research related meetings such as our research delivery and academic lunchtime meetings, and potentially TMG, DMC and ethics meetings and will also have the opportunity to spend time with the team developing potential research ideas and learning more about research infrastructure and careers.
Undergraduate academic opportunities for medical students
Elective
Occasionally EMERGE do take Elective students for research electives. These attachment are limited to 4 weeks and are arranged through the University of Edinburgh medical student elective programme. Unfortunately these cannot be arranged through EMERGE.
SSC Research programme
Unfortunately EMERGE no longer is able to support the SSC5 Research programme.
B Med Sci placements
EMERGE supports the University of Edinburgh’s intercalated BMedSci programme.

Sadly from August 2025, EMERGE is no longer is able to support Overseas Research fellowships.
Academic FY2
EMERGE supports the academic FY2 programme which allows applicants either weekly dedicated research time or a 4 month research block at FY2 level. If you are interested and have a specific project idea or area of interest you can contact the EMERGE team at Emerge@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk along with a copy of your CV. Potential EMERGE supervisor’s areas of interest can be found in the Team section of the website.

If you are completing your undergraduate degree in Nursing and are looking to complete a placement, feel free to get in touch with the EMERGE team who will show you how the research team works, along with recruitment within the Emergency Department.

Unfortunately EMERGE does not support work experience placements.
